What We Do

In keeping with our three-fold purpose of education, historical preservation and patriotism, our ongoing projects include:

Patriots Day Activities

  • Marching in the annual Lexington Patriots Day Parade and joining with the Lexington Minutemen to place a wreath on the obelisk, remembering the original Lexington Minutemen who fell in the fighting on April 19, 1775

Community Activities

  • Sponsoring DAR Good Citizen awards at nine local high schools (Arlington, Billerica, Burlington, Lexington, North Reading, Reading, Stoneham, Wilmington and Winchester)
  • Recognizing outstanding community service
  • Recognizing Outstanding Teachers of American History
  • Sponsoring American History Essay contests for 5th to 12th graders
  • Supporting the Hillside School in Marlborough, Massachusetts, and five other DAR schools
  • Supporting patients at the Edith Nourse Rogers Veterans Hospital in Bedford
  • Restoring and maintaining local historic monuments including the horse water trough located on the traffic island at the corner of Bedford and Reed streets and the bronze plaque installed on the Lexington Green by our chapter to mark the site of the old town belfry

Some Highlights of Chapter Accomplishments 2013-2016

  • Logged over 2,000 hours of community service, above and beyond regular DAR activities (2014)
  • Honored the first woman pilot to fly as an experimental research pilot for the MIT Lincoln Test Facility with an Outstanding Women in American History Award
  • Commemorated the 70th anniversary of the end of the Second World War with a WWII night where members brought in photos of WWII veterans and listened to a presentation of the making of the documentary, The Ghost Army by producer, Rick Beyer (2015)
  • Sponsored the Lexington Historical Society’s application for a NSDAR Special Projects Grant to “Document, Appraise and Conserve” the society’s collection of historic American flags ranging from the late 1770s through the 1950s (2015)
  • Won 3rd Place in the Nation for Chapter Achievement (2016)
  • Added more than 125 new members! (2013-2016)
